The defection of several of the topweights has rather weakened the field for the open sprint, but the material remains to ensure an interesting spectacle. Included, however, are two Guineas candidates, Beau Vaals and John Gay, but it would not surprise to find both declining the classic engagement. A favoured trio meantime is:
The day's proceedings will close with the October Handicap, 1 mile, in which a maximum field is engaged. The Aucklander Foxlore is the only candidate on the 9.0 and over mark, but there are twelve over 8.0, including several who have shown themselves capable of running out a mile journey The position, however, is very open, for there is no Battledress engaged as there was last year.
