DEFENCE INSPECTION

POPULATION ASKED

FOR AID

LONDON, October 22

Admiral Darlan, commander-in-chief of the Vichy armed forces, arrived in Dakar today on a tour of inspection. He read over the local radio a message from Fetain calling on the people of Dakar to meet any so-called "threat" to the French Empire.

Berlin is attaching great political importance to Darlan's trip. According to the German radio, "he has gone to Dakar, the most seriously threatened point of the French colonial empire, to convince himself personally of its military .preparedness against an eventual attack."
