CIVIL DEFENCE
AUCKLAND MAYOR IMPATIENT
(P.A.) AUCKLAND, October 22. A brief but strongly-worded criticism of the Government's delays in dealing with the civil defence man-power problem was uttered by the Mayor, Mr. Allum, in opening a conference on firewatching.
"One of our principal difficulties is over the allocation of man-power," said Mr. Allum. "It is impossible to imagine how this question could have been dealt with in a more unbusinesslike manner than it has been.
- "We realise that men must go to fight. The trouble is that the resulting shortage has not been faced up to. H there are not sufficient men aged 18 to 65 for civil defence, youths and women will have to act, but the authorities have done nothing about.it. You can understand how I get a little impatient with the red tape and circumlocution that surrounds what we are trying.to do,**
