WARPLANE FERRYING
U.S. ARMY TO TAKE OVER
(Rec. 9 a.m.) WASHINGTON. Oct. 4,
The army plans to take over the ferrying of warplanes from the United States to the Middle East on November 1, after the expiration of the contract of the Pan-American company which has been carrying on the work with civilian pilots. Officials stated that the Pan-American Company pioneered the routes and has done a brilliant job, but the army has long been preparing to use military crews for the ferry service to the combat zones.
All planes destined for their own air forces, as well as lease-lend craft, will ..be handled by the army. Many of the company's civilian pilots are expected to accept commissions and continue their service.
