ROMMEL'S PROTEST
NO SYMPATHY FROM AUSTRALIANS
(By Telegraph—Press Association —Copyright.)
(Special Australian Correspondent.) (Rec. 2.15 p.m.) SYDNEY, Oct. 5.
Rommel's outraged statement against the "unfair" fighting methods of '"Maori scalp-hunters" has received scant sympathy in Australia. . "The New Zealanders apparently refuse to carry oh the war according to the rules which the Nazis would proscribe for them," comments the "Sydney Morning Herald" editorially today. "So dead are these warriors to any sense of gentlemanly behaviour that they penetrate a position and simply kill everybody—whereas killing everybody, it should be understood, is a privilege reserved for the herrenvolk.
"The hearts of the Nazis turn soft and they sicken when they themselves are the victims of the ruthlessness which they* employ against the conquered nations. It is the old, familiar German mixture of whining and bullying in turns.
"Surely recollections of the formidable fighting' qualities of the New Zealand troops in the last war should have forewarned the Nazis of the consequences of provoking another quarrel with them."
