A defect in the hearth of a fireplace is believed to have been the cause of an outbreak of fire in the sitting-room of a wooden house at 47 Belvedere Road. Hataitai, early this morning. The Fire Brigade received the alarm about 6 a.m. and found the occupier-, Mrs. R. A. Lye, keeping the flames in check with buckets of water. The fire was soon extinguished. It had apparently been smouldering beneath the hearth overnight. While engaged on clearing up the wreckage of the scaffolding carried away by the weight of masonry upon it at the premises of Levin and Co., in Customhouse Quay yesterday. Mr. D. Biissett, . a carpenter, of. VI Apuka Street, Brooklyn, struck his head against the end of a steel tube and suffered a severe scalp injury- The accident happened just before 6 p.m. The Free Ambulance took him to hospital. ;>
