GREAT WELSHMEN
SERVICE TO THE WORLD
Mrs. W. McLeod, who gave an address entitled "Wales and Its Early History," at the recent bi-monthly social of the Welsh Society, spoke of the Welshmen who had become famous. These men included Thomas Jefferson, third President of the U.S.A.; John Yale, founder of Yale University, whose parents had migrated from North Wales with the Pilgrim Fathers; and H. M. Stanley, who found Livingstone.
Mrs. McLeod said that in her opinion the Welsh colonist gave valuable service in the land of his adoption. Scientists included the late Sir Edge-
worth David, whose discoveries of coal meant so much to the Commonwealth of Australia, and Dr. Senth Thomas, who was behind the great success of the export of African citrus fruits. The world owed much to little nations, said the speaker, and Wales, which was not much bigger than Wellington Province, was one of these nations.
A programme of songs, elocutionary items, and a sketch in which Mrs. Tarrant, Mrs. Jesson, and Misses Babbage, Jean Dinnie, and N. Little, were the performers, completed the evening's entertainment.
