METHOD OF ENEMY

LANDINGS BUILDING UP FORCE

NEW YORK, Sept. 10.

"Japanese air raids are almost daily and nightly affairs as the Japanese continue to dispute control of the air with the navy and army flyers operating from Guadalcanar," says Mr. Tillman Durdin, the "New York Times" war correspondent, in a dispatch from ■ the Solomon Islands.

Often the aerodrome is the target for the bombing, but sometimes the Japanese go for ships in the harbour.

i "The Allied domination of this vital island is also being disputed," Mr. DurI din says. "In a series of landings by | small forces, the Japanese are building up a counter-attacking force, and more fighting is in prospect before the marines can completely secure their 'foothold here.

"As I stepped ashore I saw hundreds of Japanese prisoners being marched aboard a transport. They were being taken to prison camps outside the theatre of hostilities.

"This was the biggest group of pristiners yet taken in the Pacific war. Some were cheerful and flashed gold teeth in smiles as they passed. Others were dejected and looked very humble, hardly like conquering sons of the Rising Sun.

"I was told that many prisoners asked daily when they were going to be killed."
