PRIORITY IN BUILDING TRADE
"A review of the present building industry position ,in Wellington was made at a recent meeting of his organisation," said Mr. W. McAra, secretary of the' Wellington Building Trades Federation, today. "The near completion of the major" defence programme would allow the transference of large numbers of men back into civil construction. Earthquake damage, however, had placed a further burden on the industry, when it had to face w«onsiderable arrears of essential civil construction. The federation considered that except for building work which was essential to the community, including residential repairs, earthquake damage work should be confined to the removal of danger to the public. No large-scale reconstruction of comparatively non-essential buildings should be undertaken until essential building requirements were met." Referring to urgent civil jobs, Mr. McAra said that one of the most urgent jobs which had to be tackled immediately was the providing of large-scale accommodation for war workers who were coming to Wellington, and who could not be provided at present with adequate accommodation,at reasonable rates.
