POTATO SHORTAGE
WHEM IT BECAME KNOWN
•:Replyirig : today to the question, as -tp when the Government became aware ofcthe lil^lihppd of an acute.shortage of potatoes, the Minister of Supply arid Munitions (Mr. Sullivan) said that the Ministry of Supply had issued the freezing order on August l v immediately definite information was available to it.
"I am advised," said the Minister, "that the Department of Agriculture has for spme time been apprehensive that adequate-supplies of potatoes to fill all requirements might not be available because of the small acreage grown this season and the possibility that the South Island yield might not be up to •earlier expectations. It is, however, quite impossible to forecast yields with any" degree of accuracy until -digging is completed, and. this was rendered doubly difficult this year as harvesting was in many cases delayed. It-has been revealed only recently that the yields have been less than were anticipated and this, coupled with the fact that' consumption (particularly by the armed forces) has been considerably, greater than could have been expected, has resulted in the present shortage." ,:
