In the battle of the Caucasus, now spread over nearly 200 miles, from Krasnodar to Cherkesk, the Russians are fighting stubbornly,- with varying results. Strong attacks are being made at Krasnodar, where the Russians are fighting to prevent the enemy swarming across the Kuban River in strength to attack the naval base at Novorossisk. . . In the Maikop area Soviet forces are holding out in a group of strategicallyimportant hills. , In. the Caucasus foothills the main fighting is in the Cherkesk area, where a military highway winds over the mountains. Here the Axis forces have broken through and occupied a number of defence lines, but in this difficult terrain it is too early yet to predict the course of the battle.
