POTATO PRODUCTION
- For the 1940-41' season, the latest-re-turns available, 1.6,998 acres of potatoes were planted in. New, Zealand arid, the return was 94,123 tons. , How the xrops vary from.. time to time may be understood. when it is stated that in 1937-38 the acreage, was 23,090 and the yield . 146,785 •/tons, and that there was a drop in .„ 1938-39 to 18,032 acres, and a yield #of 87,671 tons, of which 59,023 were suitable for the table. .The largest acreage m 1940----41 was in Canterbury, 8739 acres, producing 46,630 tons—approximately half the total production. Wellington carrie next-with 2405 acres, yielding 14 218 tons. The returns are for planting ■on holdings of one acre• or over situated outside boroughs. The average yield per acre amounted to about 54 tons. . n n "Exports of potatoes during 1940 amounted to 153,869cwt; in 1941 they dropped to 15,02Ccwt; and for the first five months of this year they amounted to 771 lcwt, of a value given by the Customs at £6126, whereas 9851cwt exported during the first five months of 1941 were appraised at only. £38bl;
