YOUTHFUL PILOTS
WINNERS OF BIG 'CHASE
(By "Binocular.")
For the second year in succession the Grand National Steeples was won by a horse having his first tilt at the big race and ridden by a lad who was making his first appearance in the event. Twelve months ago Astral Flame won with the apprentice J. L. Strathern in the saddle. Now, Foxiana has taken the honours with D. W. Redstone as pilot. At the time of "Astral Flame's success it was claimed that Strathern was the first apprentice to ride in the race and win it, but this is disputed. The honour seemingly belongs to the old-time rider William Naylor, who won on The Guard in 1900. He was apprenticed to the Poiirua trainer J. H; Prosser at the time, was only 16 \ years old, and weighed about 6st 121b. Unlike Astral Flame, who had won the Lawford Hack and Hunters' Steeplechase at the Christchurch Hunt Meeting ten days before adding the National Steeples, Foxiana was not even put over the Riccarton fences prior to the day. Free Response.—For the Taranaki-Egmont-Wanganui Hunt Club's Meeting at Hawera on August 29 a total of 186 entries has been deceived. No fewer than 43 have been nominated for the Weraroa Stakes (a scurry event), 35 for the Waverley Hack Handicap (6 furlongs), 27 for the Waihi Hack Han-, dicap (7 furlongs), and 20 for the Hunt Cup (2£ miles). The total of 43 in the Weraroa Hack Handicap is believed to be a record for Taranaki.
Fresh History.—For the first time in years, at least since 1915, the year the publication of the order of favouritism was permitted, a favourite won both the Grand National Steeples and Winter Cup. In following up her success in the Brabazon Handicap by adding the Winter Cup, which was over an additional furlong, Bashful Lady showed what a great mare she is. Like Foxiana. she has been the essence of consistency, for in the space of five months she has won seven times and been second once in eight starts. Three of those wins have come in the open ranks since she closed her hack career with four consecutive wins.
