Women Writers Meet.

I The result of the literary competition for tlie prize donated by Miss N. Donovan was announced at last night's meeting of the Women Writers' Society and the placed entries were read to a large audience. The winner was Mrs. M. Kelly, and Miss L. Morgan was second. Another interesting item at the gathering was Miss Paula Hanger's reading of her poem which won the Jessie 'McKay memorial competition. Picnic for Merchant Navy. Men of the Merchant Navy enjoyed a tramp and outdoor tea on Saturday, when, accompanied by members of" the British Sailors' Society, they walked from Khandallah hills to Ngaio. A social evening at the B.S.S. rooms followed, items being given by the visitors. On Sunday items were given by a Welsh choir (visitors also) and by Mr. Johanson and by Chart and Compass Club members. i Thanks are expressed to the many kind friends of Wanganui, Feilding, and Masterton who sent gifts of men's clothes, and to the girls of Wellington College for their knitting efforts on behalf of the Merchant Navy. Hie society would appreciate deeply gifts of food, home-made cakes, biscuits, vegetables, etc., to meet the constant demand upon its resources. Successful Dance. The Brougham Street Assembly Hall was packed on the occasion of the St. Patrick's College dance. Mr. Brian j O'Brien proved an extremely capable M.C. The official party included Mon- j signor Mcßae, the Rev. Father Blake, iS.M., rector of St. Patrick's College. i Captain Chaplain Trehey, Fathers Heavey, Adm., Mannix, S:M., Cleary. S.M., and the hotesses were Mesdames O'Reilly and Finucane. Those helping included Messrs. Rafter, Kelly, Harry, O'Brien. Blewman, and Mesdames Kelly, Kidd. and Misses Eller, Atley, McKinly. The whining number of the competition was 5061.
