WELLINGTON CAMPAIGN
A start was macle: in. Wellington: yesterday with the sale of.' comforts coupons. ' These are being sold /from stands in the city, staffed in the. main by members -of the Public Service. Purchasers of these coupons' may subscribe, any amount ::they wish/ for general purposes or., a specific' sum, ranging from 2 s 6d for 50 cigarettes to £500 for a recreation hut. Receipts from yesterday's. sales. amounted to £415. Two of the largest contributors were Mr. M. O. Barnett (£SO) and the Hon. W. Perry, M.L.C. (£2O). The amount required to complete the Wellington metropolitan area's quota of £106,000 is £'49,000, and. that is the goal. of.the present, campaign. .Mr. J. Annand-Smith, honorary organiser, said that- various organisations had been invited to make themselves responsible for a certain proportion of the sum required. The s Red Cross Society and St. John Ambulance organisation had been invited to raise £6000, which was the balance of the amount needed for the sick and wounded and the prisoners of war- . The churches had been asked to collect the balance of the money needed for the spiritual needs of the forces. Approaches had been made also to the R.S.A., Chamber of Commerce, Manufacturers' Association, Commercial Travellers' Association. Rotary, Club, National Savings Committee, and other groups suggesting that one or more of. their members should be asked to form committees and collect £1000.each. Already the Public Service Association was handling the coupons for comforts for the fighting services. The association, which had already collected; more than £11,000 for national and /metropolitan patriotic purposes, had agreed to nominate 'at least, three of its members to secure £1000 each.
