VICEREGAL. Government House, Wellington, August 12. His Excellency the Governor-General presided at a meeting of the Executive Council this morning.

Colonel W. W. Dove, M.C, N.Z.S.C, arrived today from Auckland. Colonel C. N. Newman, D.5.0., commanding the Auckland fortress area, is visiting Wellington. Colonel C. W. Salmon, D.CM., Deputy Quartermaster-General, Army Headquarters, returned to Wellington from Auckland today. Captain W. Martin, a well-rknown passenger vessel captain in the transPacific and trans-Tasman trade, has retired after about 45 years at sea and is now living in Sydney. He held com^ mand at various times of the Moeraki, Maheno, Maunganui, Marama, Tahiti, Makura, Monowai, Aorangi, Niagara, and Awatea.
