NEW U.S. CARRIER LAUNCHED
NEWPORT NEWS, August I.' The aircraft-carrier Essex, of 25,000 tons, the first United States carrier to be launched since Pearl Harbour, slid down the ways today. 15 months and three days after the keel was laid Tan similar carriers are still under construction, and Congress, has authorised 22 more. . ;
The navy.at present has five carriers In service, together with an undetermined number of vessels which have been converted to carriers. ,
