COMMUNITY DRAMA
Players of the Wellington East Old Girls' Dramatic Society provided the winning group in the Wellington area festival of community drama of the British Drama League, New Zealand branch, which concluded on Saturday evening in, the Concert Chamber ' of the Town Hall. The awards, announced by Miss Helen Gardner, were as follows: — ,','.'
"Novelette," by Philip Johnson. Wellington East Old Girls' Dramatic Society (Rae Carter, Joyce Roberts, Mollie Chisholm, Joyce Megget, Joan Flack), 83 points, 1; "The Goldfish." by Isobel Andrews, the Strathmpre Play Readers, 82 points, 2; "World Without Men," by Philip Johnson, the Elizabeth. McCpmbs Drama Group, 78 points, 3. Next in order were: "Postal Orders" (Pandora Players), "Mirror to Elizabeth" (Hollinside Players." "Dark Betrothal" (Wellington East Old Girls' Dramatic Society), "Slow Curtain" and "When the Whirlwind Blows" (Pins and Needles Drama Group). The president of the branch, Mr.* A. S. Farquhar, announced the results qf the one-act play-writing competition as follows:-^"In the Month of Scarcity," by Miss. Janet McLeod (Christchurch), 1; "Just Pioneers," by Miss Violet. L, Spurling (Parnell), and "Caller Herrin," by Mrs.. Leo Myers (Lower Hutt), equal, 2.. Mr. Farquhar said that the twenty-two plays entered showed a marked-^-improve-ment on.those submitted in the previous -competition some years ago, but he commented on the fact that few of the plays were New Zealand in sjetting and theme. . ' ' ■ Teh prizes were presented by Mrs. H. G. R. Mason, wife of the Minister of Education, and included the Sir Michael Myers Cup to the winning group. ' ' '
