GIRL CHARGED
IDLE AND DISORDERLY
Stated by the police to be one of a number of girls who were frequenting the city and living by consorting with members of the armed forces, iNoeline Vera Wadsworth, aged 18, a waitress, who said her home was in Parnell, Auckland, pleaded, not guilty in the Magistrate's Court today to being an idle and disorderly person.with insufficient '■ lawful means of support, but she was convicted by Mr. W. C. Harley, S.M., and remanded until Monday for sentence. • .... ■
. Senior-Sergeant G. Paine said that the defendant's sole means of livelihood in Wellington had been consorting with members v of the armed forces. She had been living with'another girl who had also been arrested and would appear before another Court The defendant was well known to the Auckland police, and she had left Auckland with two other girls, aged 15 and 16. She had been the instigator of the whole 'thing., In Wellington she had been living at Lyall Bay, and a complaint had been made to the police about' the visits of servicemen to the house where she lived. Wadsworth denied that she had left Auckland with the other two "girls, and denied that there had been any servicemen in her , room. "I. just left home," she said. "I.don't know why I did it. I just ran away from home on Saturday and came down to Wellington." She had done four hours' work since her arrival here, she said.
In cross-examination she said that she had no.t. been...very friendly with troops in Auckland, and she r had not frequented the waterfront. All the money she had had since she arrived in Wellington was £ 3 given to another girlby a serviceman. k She had had two servicemen in her room but they paid no money. She had no means of support. The senior-eefgeant agreed with the Magistrate that the defendant should be medically examined.
