TSIMLYANSK FIGHT

RUSSIANS WITHDRAW

LONDON, July 28. The Moscow communique reports battles today in the Voronezh area, and in the areas of Tsimlyansk and Bataisk. It is reported that on the upper Don the Russians have had to withdraw from places in the Tsimlyansk sector, where the Germans had established bridgeheads, and that hard fighting is going on within the Don bend and west of the river.

At Voronezh the Russians have broken through the German defences at one point. Reuter reports that in the battles German massed tank forces and massed warplanes have played a predominant part. The enemy has also increased his light field artillery. This accompanies the tanks, and if the tanks fau to break through the Germans turn to the offensive with the artillery, while if the breakthrough succeeds the artillery is used to consolidate and protect the advance.
