NEW RAILWAY LINE
WAIROA TO GISBORNE
Although the construction of the new line between Wairoa and Gisborne has not yet reached the stage where, it can be taken over by the Railway Department, arrangements have been made with the Public Works Department to enable the line to ,be used from August 3 for the conveyance of goods traffic, said the Minister of Railways (Mr. Semple) today. In order to obviate interference with the work of the Public Works Department it will be necessary to confine the trains to night funning and in consequence it will be possible to provide initially only a limited servce. A goods train will leave Wairoa for Gisborne at 7.15 p:m. each Monday, Tuesday. Wednesday, Thursday,-and Friday and on the same evenings a goods train will leave Gisborne for Wairoa at 6.45 p.nv These trains will not have close connections with' the main line services, but the Minister stated that the time-table is the best that can be arranged until the construction work is completed and daylight running between Wairoa and Gisborne becomes practicable. ■ It is anticipated that by November the line will be ready for passenger traffic and a time-table has been arranged, and will give adequate connection with express services to and from Napier and Palmerston North.
