SEARCH FOR "TANK-BUSTER"
AIRCRAFT
(Rec. 1.50 p.m.) RUGBY, July 15. " Tank-busters," fighter aircraft equipped with ,weapons capable of, penetrating the armour of tanks, were discussed in informed quarters today. It was stated that the idea that there is a standard class of aircraft called the "tank-buster" is inaccurate. The evolution of such a machine is an additional commitment of every country, but no satisfactory type has yet [been evolved, and all the nations are | Still groping for a solution. There are indications that the Germans are turning from dive-bombers to fighter-bombers. Dive-bombers are extremely formidable when anti-air-cfaft and fighter opposition is negligible, but recently there was a report of 14 dive-bombers being shot down out of 15. On the other hand, British fighter-bombers have had considerable success in the Middle East. They deliver bombs by the use of gun-sight. The angle of the dive when they are approaching the target is shallower, but they are considerably easier to manoeuvre if attacked.—B.O.W.
