DAYLIGHT RAID

AMERICANS ATTACK RANGOON

LONDON, June 8

A Reuter message from New Delhi announces that giant American bombers have- made their first daylight raid on Rangoon. The American pilots had to fly through monsoon conditions, heavy antiaircraft fire, and swarms of Japanese fighters, but they pressed bt>me their attack.

One American air gunner said he saw 12 or 15 Zero fighters swarming around him. He saw three Japanese fighters pull out of the fight, one in flames. Another American pilot said that although the Japanese pilots showed extreme daring the American gunners fought them off. R.A.F. bombers have also pounded Japanese bases in Burma. Yesterday they kept up their attacks on Akyab and a low-level attack was made on Homalin, 20 miles from the Indian frontier, where Japanese troop concentrations have been reported.
