THREE ENEMY CRAFT SUNK

LONDON, June 1. Japanese midget submarines made an unsuccessful raid inside Sydney Harbour just before midnight last night. The defences smashed the attack before any serious damage could be done, A special communique issued by General MacArthur's headquarters states that in an attempted submarine raid on Sydney three enemy midget submarines are believed to have been sunk, two by depth charges and one by gunfire. The Japanese attempt was completely unsuccessful and the damage was limited to one small vessel of no military value, says the communique. The submarines were probably of the two-man type which were used in the attack on Pearl Harbour on December 7. It is believed that the.victim of the Japanese was an 01-l ' harbour ferry. ,
