TYRE POSITION SERIOUS

COMMITTEE APPOINTED

A Land Transport Advisory | Committee to report on steps neces- j sary to meet the situation created in public road transport by the present tyre situation, and in other matters which may arise from the war, vhas been appointed by the Minister of Transport (Mr, Seraple), who announced the personnel of the committee today. . The committee comprises the fol-lowingr-rMr. G, L. Laurenson, Commissioner of. Transport (chairman); Mr. H. B, Smith, chief clerk, Transport Department (deputy chairman); Mr. J. Sawyers, Assistant .General Manager, New, Zealand Railways; Mr. C. L. Bishop, secretary, New Zealand Omnibus Proprietors' Association; Mr. J. M. Simson, president, New Zealand Master Carriers* Association; Mr, J. B. Cullen, president, New Zealand Road Transport Alliance; Mr. H. J. Knight, Secretary, New Zealand Passenger Services Federation; Mr. G. N, Shore, New Zealand Taxi Proprietors' Federation.

"I met the representatives of the road transport., industry, together with the Commissioner of Transport and the Assistant General Manager of Railways, yesterday morning," said Mr. Semple, "and we had a full discussion on the present situation. From the figures available, it is obvious that the commercial tyre position is serious, and the committee is being, set up to advise me urgently on the matter as it affects public transport. The organisations, represented' were public goods services, omnibus services, long-distance passenger services, taxi services, and the railways. These services are responsible for New Zealand's goods and passenger transport, and their continued operation is vitally essential to the country's: industrial end economic .life. It is important, however, that- tyres and also petrol be conserved as much as possible, and that anything in the way of waste running or unnecessary vehicle operation should be cut out. It is also desirable that, wherever possible, those services' which do not require 'rubber or imported fuels should be utilised, and the committee will consider these aspects of the question.".

The Minister concluded by saying .that the road- industry promptly answered his call for service, and that the committee began its functions yesterday afternoon.
