ULTIMATUM TO PETAIN
NAZI STRATAGEM OF
FORCE
LONDON, April 20
The correspondent of "The Times" on the French frontier, declaring that Laval's reinstatement was not a political but a strategic move, reveals that the Germans gave an ultimatum to Marshal Petain demanding Laval's reinstatement with totalitarian powers within seven days, otherwise the Italians would seize Tunis, Corsica, Nice, and Savoy, and the Germans would establish a rival government in Paris. '
Incontestable proof, the correspondent says, was laid before Petain that the Italians were ready and waiting for orders to march." Petain's initial resistance was finally broken by the ruse of informing the authorities at Tunis and the other threatened regions that their fate lay in Petain's hands, whereupon representatives hurnefi to Vichy and urged Petain to accept the ultimatum immediately and unconditionally.
