MUFTI ALLOWANCES
A WIDER APPLICATION
(P.A.) AUCKLAND, This Day. Following representations made by the Auckland Provincial Patriotic Council through the National Patriotic Council the War Cabinet has approved payment of mufti allowances to members of all the armed forces on discharge, including certain of those who have not left New Zealand. Hitherto such allowances have been payable only to returning members of the New Zealand Expeditionary Force. Until last November the amount was £7 10s, but this was increased retrospectively to £12 10s, at a total cost of £10,000. Advice received by the chairman of the Provincial Patriotic Council, Mr. J. A. C. Allum, states that the allowance of £12 10s has been extended to members of the Navy and Air Force returning from overseas. : The extension is made retrospective to the outbreak of the war. In addition the War Cabinet has approved an allowance of £7 10s to members of the three Services who have not served overseas but have given full time continuous service for 12 months prior to discharge. This authority operates on and after April 1, In the event of any former member of the forces joining up and serving for a further twelve months no further similar grant is to be made. The following sections of the military forces are covered by the authority:— Territorial Force temporary staff, temporary employment section, guards vital points. Army Nursing Service, Women's War Service Auxiliary, and Home Guard. No officer or man discharged or placed on leave without pay prior to April 1, 1942. is entitled to the £7 10s allowance.
