VALUE' OF SCRAP RUBBER. The British, Ministry of Supply controlling the collection1 of scrap rubber, fixing prices, and licensing dealers, fixed the ' following prices. Woolworth and Co.. chain stores, London, reported net profit £6,404,759 for 1941, against £7,958,159 for 1940—a record Taxation took £3,557,205, against £4,310,910. Completion of the Canterbury onion harvest is now in sight. The crop Is a big one, and the onions themselves are bigger than in most years. Onions are now selling at around £ 7 a ton, and in the last few days a fair share of the bags have been bought for export to Australia. The export of onions Is welcomed this year, because the bigger onions are not always the best keepers, and those which go to Australia are sold for immediate consumption. FREEZING WORKS OUTPUT. Official figures for killings at the Dominion's freezing works from October 1 to March 28 issued by the Meat Board, show that lamb killings to that date totalled 8.363,257 ccs., a decrease of 159,729 ccs. compared with killings to March 29 last season. Wether mutton killings were 613,308 ccs., and ewe mutton killings 1,513,915 ccsi, compared with 490,772 and 1,279,521 ccs. respectively last season. Frozen beef, 205,758 qrs., compared with 279,859 qrs. last season. Porker killings, 117,887 ccs., an increase of 35,671; baconers. 197,889 ccs., a decrease of 67,147. . : ECONOMISING BANK STAFFS. English experience of man-power economies effected by the closing down of bank branches has been rather disappointing, according to the remarks of the bank chairmen at recent annual meetings. All the banks have been endevouring to economise in the services of their staffs, but the volume of work is exceptionally large. "Our experience in pre-war days when we have amalgamated two of our branches in the same town has been somewhat disappointing." said the chairman of Lloyd'a Bank. "The hoped-for economy In staff has frequently been found In actual practice illusory. The combined business required a number of staff not far short of the total of the two separate hranrhps."
