TREASURER'S REPORT

A preliminary- report upon city finances was presented to the City Council last night by the City Treasurer, Mr. B. O. Peterson. A feature of the year's figures was the extraordinarily l^igh proportion of rates collected, the estimate being £629,462, and the amount collected, including arrears, £631,876. Petrol tax returns, £22,518, were also in excess of the estimated, £20,500, as were heavy traffic fees, £21,630 (£20,000); rents totalled £65,923 (estimate £65,000); water by meter, £33,582 (£31,000); but licences, £13,873, were below the estimate, £15,500. The rate collection represented 98.1. per cent, of the levy, the highest for 130 years. The total payment made on account of the E.P.S. was £28,856, of which £10,419, related to expenditure on public shelters. I The cost of storm damage to March! 131 was £8056.. ? . j
