MILK DEPARTMENT

SMALL CREDIT BALANCE

A report presented to the City Council last night by the General Manager of the Milk Department, Mr. E. L. Benseman, stated that the net profit for the'year ended March 31 was £1360 8s 7d. This was a reduction of £2197 0s 8d compared with the previous year. This was caused by increased working expenses (£7407); the result of war conditions, but increased sales (a record in the history of the department) had made it possible to end the year with a small profit. The main figures (with those for the preceding year in parentheses) are:— Revenue, £406,689 (£399,763); net profit, £1360 (£3557); total gallons of milk sold, 3,107,306 (3,063,021); school milk, included in the above total gallonage, 250,806 (259,972); pints of cream sold, 530,872 (481,992); gallons of ice cream mixture, 99,969 (90,456). The proportion of first-grade milk supplied by the Wellington Dairy Farmers' Association was again high, 98.75 per cent. (99.10 per cent,). The chairman of the committee; Councillor L. S. McKenzie, expressed the warmest appreciation of the loyalty of the^ members of the union in assisting the management during a most difficult period, and also of the manner in which the suppliers had more than met their commitments, in spite of man-poWer problems. He also thanked the public for its co-operation in placing bottles in more" convenient places for the roundsmen. ' .
