CRUISE OF AMERICAN
SUBMARINE
WASHINGTON, April 11,
A Navy Department communique states: "A United States submarine, returning from an extended patrol in enemy waters in the Far East theatre, reported that it sank a 7000-ton enemy merchantman and a small submarine chaser, and damaged and possibly sank a 4000-ton freighter!
"The communique of April 4 has been corrected, and it is now known that a light enemy cruiser was sunk in the vicinity of Christmas Island, in the Indian Ocean, another light cruiser was damaged and believed to have been sunk, and a third cruiser was damaged off Christmas Island. [The previous communique reported the sinking of one cruiser and the possible sinking of another.]
"Further, a large transport was damaged near Bali; a destroyer and a large transport were sunk and an unidentified vessel was damaged in the vicinity of Bali; further, a supply ship was damaged near Lombok Island. "All the above results, except that near Lombok Island, were achieved by one submarine on a single patrol." SUBMARINE LOST. The submarine Perch is overdue in the western Pacific and is presumed lost. The Perch operated in the Java Sea.
The Navy Department announced that one Allied merchantman was torpedoed, a medium-sized vessel shelled, and another medium-sized ship torpedoed by submarines operating in the Atlantic.
A later communique today announced the loss on Wednesday morning of two more, medium-sized United States merchantmen by enemy torpedoing off the Atlantic coast. At least two and possibly more submarines, operating within throe miles of one another, accounted for the vessels. Fifty-four seamen survived, and 21 are dead or missing.
