REDUCED ACTIVITY

FEBRUARY AIR OPERATIONS

RUGBY, March 5. Somewhat less air activity was undertaken against the enemy during February than during January. Operations were carried out by the Bomber Command on 16 out of 28 nights, while the R.A.F. as a whole carried out offensive operations on 17 days and 16 nights. Very bad weather conditions were responsible for this reduction. There was a similar reduction in enemy raids on Britain during February. The R.A.F. destroyed during February 35 enemy aircraft, of which 31 were destroyed by day and four by night. The attacks by the R.A.F. cost 79 aircraft, of which 60 were lost by day and 19 by night:'' The total included the 36 planes lost in the Channel battle against the three German warships which escaped from Brest. In the Middle East the R.A.F. destroyed 67 enemy aircraft and lost 75.—8.0. W.
