U.S. AID TO RUSSIA
FURTHER SERIOUS DELAYS
PREDICTED
(Rec. 11 a.m.) NEW YORK, Feb. 27.
Further serious delays in the American lend and lease aid to Russia ara predicted by officials, reports the Washington correspondent of the "Herald Tribune." They explain that large amounts of military equipment have been earmarked for Russia but diverted for the American forces by order of the War Department, and also that there is insufficient cargo space to Russia since Pearl Harbour.
The construction of cargo ships has , been boosted by 50 per cent, to . counter-balance the heavy sinkings and prepare for Allied expeditionary forces in 1943, says the "Wall Street Journal." A goal has been tentatively set at 9,000,000 tons in 1942. and 15,000.000 tons in 1943, or 6,000,000 tons higher than President Roosevelt's victory programme. Next year four ships will be launched daily.
