RELEASE OF PETROL

MOTOR TRADE HELPED

The New Zealand Motor Trade Federation states that it views with satisfaction the release of sufficient petrol to enable the partial restoration of licences for industrial purposes. Already the motor industry has felt the benefit of the release of this petrol and it is evident that production, both primary and secondary, has been speeded up as a result. The Minister promised that, provided the petrol position continued satisfactory, it would be possible to make some allowance to owners of private vehicles in March, and motorists are anxiously awaiting a further statement.

A few people have criticised the promise of the Minister to release petrol for private vehicles as soon as the stock position justified it. Some of this criticism has been ■ based on either ignorance or lack of ability to appreciate the value of the private motor vehicle to the national security of the Dominion. There are over 207,000 private motor vehicles, and many of these have been immobilised since December. Unless petrol is made available to put these vehicles on the road in March, many of them will not be able to function.
