CITY SUB-CENTRE

VARIETY OF RED CROSS

WORK

Activities of the Red Cross Society in Wellington vary from making surgical dressings, staffing a cafeteria at the Public Hospital, etc., to conducting first aid and other classes, and the complete training of a unit of voluntary women drivers. At the recent meeting of the Wellington City sub-centre, at which Mr. C. H. Chapman presided, full reports of these and other activities were given by the various leaders within the centre.

The commandant of the Women's Transport Service reported that all members had been allocated to the A.D.S. and first aid posts throughout the district, that two teams entered in a marching competition had taken first and second places and had won a silver cup, and that training was being carried on as usual. The Red Cross sister reported that Japan's entry into the war had greatly affected first aid classes., which began on January 12. Overflow classes were also being conducted, and the total was 350 elementary students attending the four classes. WORKING FOR GARDEN PARTY. Blind students passing through Wellington for their summer holiday were entertained by the social club for the blind. The cafeteria secretary reported that, the reopening of the cafeteria at the Public Hospital was much appreciated by patients. Duties at the hospital and at the Red Cross Home were carried out by members of the Voluntary Aid Detachment, many of whom had been appointed to service overseas. The social club helped in packing prisoner of war parcels, and with preparations for the forthcoming Red Cross garden party at the home in Hobson Street; and the ladies' auxiliary, among-other activities, assisted regularly in the surgical dressings department and the office.

The chairman reported that all sections were co-operating to make the garden fete at the Red Cross Home an outstanding success.
