SALVAGED MATERIAL USED

WASHINGTON, February 21.

A United States navy communique states: "In addition to the naval battalion, composed of bluejackets and marines, which is fighting with General Mac Arthur's command, considerable equipment which was salvaged from the naval base at Cavite and other sources of naval supply has been used to good advantage in the defence of Batan Peninsula.

"Rear-Admiral Frank S. Rochwell, commandant of the 16th Naval District, the senior naval officer fighting with General Mac Arthur, reports that this equipment consists .of three-inch and four-inch artillery and also boat guns (salvaged from ships) and machineguns of several types, with ammunition.

"A large number of hand-grenades, aircraft bombs, and depth charges has also been available."
