BATTLE OF SINGAPORE

WORK OF SALVATION ARMY

The following cable has been received from the Salvation Army International Headquarters by Commissioner J. Evan Smith, Territorial Commander for the Salvation Army in New Zealand:—

"Salvationists rendered extensive air-raid relief during the battle for Singapore, twelve mobile canteens taking sustenance to victims and passive defence workers. Lady Shenton Thomas, wife of the Governor, gave regular service at a Red Shield Club, which supplied thousands of meals daily. Social homes carried on cheerfully and soul-saving meetings continued. British, Australian, Indian, and Malayan officers remained at their posts of duty after the Japanese occupation. Some are now presumed interned. The wives and children only were evacuated."
