END TO COMPETITION
(P.A.) • CHRISTCHURCH, This Day,
"Defence building work that would open the eyes of people if we could tell them is going on in this country," said the Minister of Public Works (Mr. Armstrong) this morning. "We are not as helpless or as hopeless as some people seem to imagine."
The Minister was commenting on a discussion at the Southland County Council meeting where members considered that men should be withdrawn ■from housing and, all other non-essen-tial industries and diverted to essential defence and the fighting services.
"Defence work has got to take precedence," said the Minister, "and to this end the Chief Engineer to tho Public Works Department and the Director of Housing Consti-uction are working together. Previously the two Departments would sometimes be in competition for men and materials, but now they have to act as one organisation for defence and construction work."
