PERIOD ENDED

COMPULSORY ENROLMENT

The extended period f,or compulsory enrolment in the Emergency Reserve Corps ended yesterday. Enlistments in some areas have been much heavier than in others, and the general experience has been that most of the signing up has been for the E.P.S.

It was open to those required to enrol to join any branch of the E.R.C., and it was expected that when that had been made perfectly clear by the Minister of National Service (Mr. Semple), enlistments in the Home Guard would show a sharp rise, even taking into account that number that had already joined that branch of the E.R.C. The response in that direction was surprisingly low compared with that for the E.P.S. •;••■■.
