SHANTUNG CAMPAIGN
MESSAGE TO COUNTRYMEN
JAPANESE BEING HELD
NEW YORK, February 18,
Chungking radio announced that Japan had thrown more than 20,000 men, together with aerial support, into the battle lines in southern Shantung Province, but' that the Chinese resistance continued to be strong at every point'after three days of fighting. The enemy had lost 2000 killed and wounded.
The radio added that by guerrilla tactics and propaganda work Korean rebels are actively campaigning in north China against the Japanese. Scores of Koreans clashed with Japar ede recently in Hopei Province. Heavy casualties were inflicted on the Japanese and considerable equipment was captured.
LONDON, February 19,
Before leaving Calcutta this morning Marshal Chiang Kai-shek addressed a message to the Chinese nation.
The message called on the Chinese people to make a still greater war effort and achieve national mobilisation. It added'that modern war was not a mere matter of military operations but involved the whole strength and all the resources of the nation.
The message announced that plans for further national mobilisation approved last December were to be carried out in full.
