A REPORT DENIED

AUSTRALIA AND SINGAPORE

NEW YORK, February 16

The columnists Pearson and Allen, in the nationally-syndicated column "Washington Merry-Go-Round," describe tonight the meeting in Washington between Mr. Churchill and the Australian Minister to Washington (Mr. Casey), during the Prime Minister's recent visit in which they discussed the defence of Singapore. The columnists allege that Mr. Casey told Mr, Churchill point-blank that Singapore must be defended and warned that otherwise the Australian truops would be Withdrawn from the Near East. Mr. Casey, it is alleged, furthermore suggested that if London deserted the Australians by hot defends ing Singapore Australia could withdraw from the war and make a septate peace with Germany. Mr. Churchill yielded to this threat and sent reinforcements, which arrived too late.

The columnists predict that this incident will bring closer ties between Australia and the United States.

Mr. Case;' today authorised the Australian Associated Press to say that the allegations are entirely without foundation.
