NATIONAL SAVINGS

DECEMBER'S HIGH LEVEL

National savings for December reached the high level of £422,635, second only to the record savings of £437,929 last June, said the chairman of the New Zealand National Savings Committee (Mr. T. W. Smallwood) yesterday. From December 16 to 23 a record total of £145,960 was received, the previous best week being from July 1 to 7, when £130,542 was paid in.

Mr. Smallwood said that the receipts during the current financial year to January 7 amounted to £2,693,000, making a grand total of £4,014,000 since the inception of the campaign in October, 1940.

"The position in the Pacific has .brought home to the people of New Zealand the fact that we are all in this war whether soldier or civilian, and the large numbers now being called, up for service in our Armed Forces will gradually increase our commitments arising from the war," said Mr. Smallwood. "It is therefore more essential than ever that during the coming months there should be no falling off in national savings receipts, and to ensure this, those remaining in civilian occupations will realise the necessity for making even greater sacrifice by saving more and lending mort in the future." ■" :
