NO AGREEMENT
N.Z. DRIVERS' AWARD
After two days' hearing in the New Zealand road transport and motor and horse drivers' dispute, conciliation proceedings were adjourned yesterday to a date to be fixed by the parties, as a deadlock had been reached, Mr, S. Ritchie» Conciliation -Commissioner, presided. The advocate for the workers was Mr. F. C. Allerby (Wellington) and the advocate for the employers was Mr. H. J. Bishop (Wellington).
This position was reached yesterday afternoon,. when Mr. AUerby said that the granting of the 5s increase sought for omnibus and service car drivers was essential to further negotiations. The dispute-could not go to the Court on the wages issue alone while there were so many other matters unsettled, he said. He offered to accept the 1938 award as it was, however, if the employers would grant the increase sought. The employers, said Mr. Bishop, would not agree to any increase in wages.
The dispute was adjourned sine die by the Commissioner, either party to be allowed to bring it on again with a month's notice.
