BRILLIANT CAREER

NEW COLLEGE PRINCIPAL FOR DUNEDIN

Miss- Winifred McQuilkan, M.A. (N.Z.), B.A. (Oxon), has been appointed by the Board of Governors as principal of Columba Presbyterian Girls' College, Dunedin. Miss McQuilkan, who was born in Invercargill, received her early education at the Southland Girls' High School, where she had a brilliant career, heading New Zealand examination lists on various occasions, and qualifying before she left school for no fewer than six scholarships.

As dux of her school she entered the University of Otago, where she gained her M.A. degree with first-class honours in English,' being awarded a James Clark Prize, the Otago University Macmillan Brown Prize for original verse, and a George Young Scholarship for general excellence. In the following year she obtained a Diploma of Honours in Latin, and also a New Zealand University Macmillan Brown Prize for original verse.

In 1937, as a travelling scholar of the University of New Zealand, Miss McQuilkan proceeded to Somerville College, Oxford, where, in 1939, she gained her B.A. degree with first-class honours in English.

Miss McQuilkan has many interests other than academic. She holds the L.T.C.L. diploma for pianoforte and has ben an active contributor to various university and other periodicals both in New Zealand and overseas. She took advantage of the opportunity while abroad, to see something of England and the Continent, and since her return to the Dominion has delighted many audiences by her entertaining talks on travel as well as on literary topics.
