FIERCE BATTLES

SOUTH-WEST FRONT

(Rec 9 a.m.) LONDON, Jan. 26.

Moscow radio said that a special announcement from the south-west front reported that the Russians had engaged in fierce battles and were successfully pressing forward. They liberated a number of places.

The Germans are stubbornly resisting, but are being hurled out from their strongholds.

Kuibyshev radio said that the Russian recapture of Xndreapol, 80 miles eastwards of Velikve Luki, Peno, and Toropets cost the Germans 9000 dead,

A Death's Head cavalry brigade was wiped out.
