ORDER TO MEMBERS
STICK TO AWARD
UNION AND HOLIDAY WORK
(P.A.)
AUCKLAND, January 26,
Instructions have been issued to members of the Auckland Boilermakers' Union that they are to ignore the Overtime and Holiday Suspension Order, 1941, in respect of work on Anniversary Day, January 29, and that they must 'not work on that day except under the terms of their award, which provides that work on holidays must be paid at treble time but was abrogated by the recent order.
The letter to members reads: "The annual meeting directed that the following instructions be issued to members. The cancellation of the holiday (Anniversary Day) by emergency regulation is to be totally ignored. No
boilermaker is to work on January 29 on any conditions other than those set out in clause 6of the award. These instructions are issued in accordance with the resolution adopted by the Federation of Labour (Auckland Council) on January 15."
Asked to comment upon the decisions of different unions to work on Anniversary Day only at award rates, the Minister of Labour (Mr. Webb) said the organisations would be deregistered if they took this stand. "That is definitely our attitude," he added. "There is no let-up and no compromise. The work must go on. If men have grievances there are channels through which they can be ventilated, but the work must go on."
