RETURN TO BRITAIN
SURRENDERED BASES
NEW APPROACH TO EIRE?
(By Telegraph—Press Association—Copyright.) LONDON, January 11. A new approach is being made to the Government of Eire for an agreement, of which the most important item would be the leasing to Britain of naval and air bases in Eire, says the political correspondent of the "Daily Telegraph." Under the agreement of 1938 Britain surrendered three important bases, Queenstown, Lough Swilly, and Bere-
haven. The use of these bases by British and American naval and air forces would have a most beneficial effect on the Battle of the Atlantic. Any agreement will probably include economic concessions to Eire to enable her to meet wartime difficulties. Mr. de Valera has hitherto firmly declined to discuss the question of bases, but it is possible that the United States' entry into the war may have influenced opinion in Eire.
