ENEMY SHIPS BOMBED

LONDON, January 12. A supplement to the Batavia communique says that our allies are energetically taking part in the fighting there. Allied planes yesterday shot down four Japanese planes over Minahassan and scored two direct hits on a Japanese cruiser and a near-miss on a destroyer. I This morning, two Australian planes were shot down in flames by the Japanese near Menado, in northern Celebes. Our heavy bombers this morning scored a direct hit on a Japanese cruiser lying off Tarakan, while our Glenn Martin bombers also scored two direct hits on two Japanese transports lying there. It is also reported from Singapore this morning that three Japanese planes were shot down by Dutch fighters. ' One Dutch pilot had to bale out after shooting down two Japanese planes. He landed safely by parachute. It is also reported from Batavia that "tfO wounded have been disembarked at Balik Papan, on' the east coast of Dutch Borneo, from a vessel which had been bombed and machine-gunned by the Japanese. Japanese Imperial headquarters claimed today that Tarakan surrendered yesterday and also that Menado had been captured.
