FIGHTING RETREAT
TROOPS AT SEREMBAN
(Rec. 10 a.m.) RUGBY, Jan. 12. The official communique from Singapore states: "Severe fighting continues in the Selangor area. "Our troops have been withdrawn to positions north of Seremban where they are now in".contact with ..the enemy*.'' Our withdrawal was closelyfollowed up by the enemy infantry, with continued attacks from enemy aircraft. "A small party of nine of the enemy, dressed as Malays, landed in the Bukit Churang area in south-east Johore from fishing sampans yesterday. A party was sent out to deal with them and captured all nine. SEREMBAN BOMBED. ■ "Seremban was bombed yesterday, slight damage being caused to road communications which has been repaired. Enemy aircraft made a further raid on Muar yesterday, machinegunning the town and sinking one small ship. "There has been a number of raids today on Singapore by enemy aircraft. Preliminary reports on the • first raid indicate no damage and two casualties. The enemy aircraft were engaged by our fighters, but details of the combats are not yet available. "No reports of damage or casualties from subsequent raids have so far been received." ' SITE OF NEW POSITION. Seremban, to a position north of which the British forces in Malaya have withdrawn, is in Negri Sembilan, about 30 miles south of Kuala Lumpur. From the fact that enemy infantry' closely followed up the retreat it seems clear that Kuala Lumpur, the capture, of which has been claimed by the Japanese, has in fact been evacuated.—B.O.W.
