DEADLY RECORD

R.A.F. FIGHTER SQUADRON

LONDON, January 12. One of the finest chapters in the Libyan campaign concerns the exploits of a Royal Air Force Squadron of longrange Hurricane fighters, with bases deep in the desert south of the attacking British force. Covering the activity of the army, the fighters attacked the enemy over a wide area, destroying at least 13 aircraft, damaging many more, and accounting for almost 400 transport vehicles of all kinds. Their raids ■ struck at the enemy's supply lines and landing grounds, many targets being strafed from near ground level. Jedabaya, Benina, El Agheila, and other places suffered from their forays. The attack on Jedabaya destroyed two enemy aircraft and damaged five more. One pilot damaged three fighters and set an 579 on fire. The squadron's bag of 13 included a troop transport destroyed. ■• No one escaped from this flaming pyre. The squadron leader calculates that at least 70 lorries and large vehicles have been burned out entirely, while over 300 others have been badly damaged. These successes were achieved at a cost to the squadron of three pilots missing from operations.
